| Vanceboro man arrested on breaking and entering charge
A Vanceboro man, Richard James Valerio, was arrested Thursday night and accused of breaking into a home on Old Cherry Point Road and stealing a handgun, jewelry, money and pills. Rick Barney, Craven County Sheriff investigator, said Valerio, 28, is accused of being involved in breaking into the home and stealing the items. Barney said a 2002 Chevrolet used in the alleged theft was seized from Valerio. He was jailed under a $4,000 bond. .
Tiffany Outlook Is Lowered On Slowing Luxury-Goods Sales
Signaling that the slowdown in sales of luxury goods is broadening, upscale jewelry retailer Tiffany & Co. cut the top end of its profit forecast because of weak holiday sales. Kaki King has her chic new designer dress, her matching shoes, her great-grandmother's rhinestone jewelry, her plane ticket to Los Angeles and her Golden Globe nomination. What Kaki King doesn't have is a Golden Globes ceremony to attend. Scheduled for Sunday, the Globes were canceled because of the writers strike, leaving new nominee King, an Atlanta native and acclaimed guitarist, in limbo. .
Maitland Art Center spotlights Barbara Tiffany
Aretrospective of Barbara Tiffany's work from the last 20 years opens today at the Maitland Art Center (231 W. Packwood Ave.), but if you wait to see it Saturday you can also enjoy the MAC's "Metal Arts Open House," 10 a.m.-3 p.m. At the open house there will be live demonstrations of sculpting, bronze- and silver-casting and jewelry-making in the studios by MAC instructors. This is a good way to meet the students and staff and learn something about this ancient creative process. You might want to register for some of MAC's excellent classes (also go to maitlandartcenter.org/classes.htm). Then step inside the main gallery and find out why Tiffany has become a fixture in Central Florida's art scene. The retrospective will include her popular portraits, landscapes and still-life oil paintings (her primary medium, but she is also known for her colored-pencil works and photography).
