My Vote - and Cy Young - Goes to Sabathia

I love how people (read: Sox fans) automatically think this is a Yankees-Red Sox thing. I'm a Giants fan. There is no pitcher I dislike on a personal basis more than Lackey, who beat SF in Game 7 in 2002. But he had the best ERA in the league and helped his team win the division. He deserved my second-place vote.

As for you, HeadFanBoy (who is probably the same person as pacman), had I been a true Yankees fanboy, I would have voted Wang in my top three. But he didn't deserve a vote, so I didn't give him one.

And for those of you who keep harping on the postseason, I repeat YET AGAIN ... I had to vote before the postseason started. We didn't know the Yankees would lose in the first round, we didn't know the Red Sox would win it all and we didn't know that Sabathia, Lackey and Carmona would be awful.

The Shakertown Roundtable: Early childhood education in focus

But the emphasis this time was on the particularly critical area of early childhood education and the promise it holds for Kentucky as an economic development strategy.

The 50 or so private sector leaders who came together around this topic gained new insights into its importance and the impact it can have on a state that continues to struggle with the negative consequences of its failure to invest in education.

Education experts explained Kentucky's realities in detail -- a 22 percent poverty rate for our children; a 40th national ranking in the well-being of our children; the limited level of service provided by the state's existing preschool program; the acute need for expanded and higher quality care and education services for children beginning at birth.

Economists created perhaps the greatest excitement with their research reports reflecting the long-term impact of quality early care and education.

Everyone's a critic (and not just of LT)

In the first five days after the game, more than 30 threads about Tomlinson had been started in the Chargers forum on the SignOnSanDiego Web site and more than 1,500 comments were posted. (Not including, mind you, the one thread calling for a boycott of Tomlinson threads.) Several actually were started during Sunday's game.

"The new generation is being encouraged to have opinions, and to express them, and certainly there are many outlets that allow people to get their opinion out," said Tim Wulfemeyer, coordinator of the journalism degree program at San Diego State. "The media is now engaging people. Your own newspaper is engaging its readership, driving people to its Web site, seeking their responses.

"Look at the whole 'American Idol' phenomenon, the shows where they tell you your opinion matters.

Tuning TECH to Business

Those skills are desperately needed, especially considering the technology and business agenda of IT managers in the coming year. Topping the list of technology priorities is creating and improving strategic applications. Ranking equally high: improving the IT infrastructure (expanding it at midmarket companies; standardizing and consolidating it at larger organizations), and improving the quality of information. Previous research by Ziff Davis Enterprise validates these trends, as many organizations report steady migration to service-oriented architectures (SOAs), adoption of virtualization, and a reduction in server and storage infrastructure footprints.
